Currently there are three major networks that control the paid search landscape
controlling 82% of the market. Google has the majority with 35% marketshare,
Yahoo is a close second with 31.8%, while MSN is slowly catching up with 16 percent.
Different search engines attract different audience profiles. Hitwise data
have found that both MSN.co.uk and Google UK attract the wealthiest online segments,
which are also most likely to shop and book online. While Google UK users were
found to have a unique strength among those living in rural areas and retirees
living comfortably, search engine Ask.co.uk was found to have a unique strength
among young couples with children, which is a desirable segment to many marketers.
